2014 Les Cadrans de Lassegue Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Dear Oenophile
I don’t know about you but I am starved for Bordeaux. The style, aromatic and flavors all represent a sense of place. Which, when you look at it, is how Bordeaux is labeled.  It’s all about the map. They name wine after a village, or a mountain, a river or a house. What do we do over here? Ingredients, grapes, science, go go go. If a little is good a lot is better. It’s starting to change now.  Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley has a sense of place. The Cabernet and Merlot from Red Mountain (Washington state) likewise.
Enough preamble. This wine drinks beautifully. Deep red dark center to clear red rim. Perfumed red fruit is tight but with air yields a light sweet oak. The mouth is red fruited and decidedly dry with mild lovely tannin’s. Medium full on the palate at 13% (a lovely break from 15.5%) it’s very satisfying and complex with fruit and non-fruit flavors.
Lassegue is owned by Kendall Jackson and the wine maker is Pierre Seillan. Pierre is KJ’s lead winemaker for all of their high end projects. I have had lots of his work it’s always exceptional. I can tell you this, he is not afraid of tannin. Les Cadrans is the second label of Lassegue. Cadrans (dial) refers to the sundials on the buildings. This blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Paaaaleeessse do not diss Merlot. This is not California junk.
Yes, this wine has a sense of place.
